Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
